REALISM IN ASIAN ART 9 APR - 4 JUL 2010
The exhibition Realism in Asian Art is about the impact of realist approaches to painting in different parts of Asia.
The term ‘realism’ refers more specifically to the 19th-century Western art movement that accentuated the observation of everyday life. In other words, the artist would attempt to represent things as they are in real life. Realist artworks are characterised by their subject matter, and typically they portrayed scenes of peasant and working class life, urban street life and entertainment for the masses. Portraiture was also favoured. This exhibition displays the different kinds of realism that were produced across Asia and is the first-ever attempt to understand a strong and important genre in Asian modern art. Joining until the 4th July 2010 is our own Abdullah Basoeki, to name one of the few.

BALI
ART BIENNALE 2005
Year Long Celebration
and Promotion of Bali's Arts to Culminate in November-December
Arts Summit.
An ambitious plan to bring Bali's art scene into equal standing
with the community of worldwide artists is the aim of the
Bali Art Biennale 2005 - a year long program of exhibitions
and art events culminating in an Arts Summit to be held in
November-December 2005.
The Bali Art Biennale 2005 theme - Space and Scape - will
focus on spatial awareness and the role of space and proportion
in Balinese art.
Pre-summit events will be comprised of exhibitions and artistic
happenings held at various venues and galleries across Bali
from January through October 2005. The final Summit will be
convened in November-December 2005.
The Summit scheduled at the end of the year seeks to map the
history and various influences on contemporary Balinese art
and conclude with a competition to select 10 winners of the
Bali Biennale Art Award. To date, 10 leading Bali galleries
and museums have expressed interest in supporting the Bali
Arts Biennale 2005.
Organizers, quoted in the local press, have expressed their
desire to win Bali artists long-overdue recognition in contemporary
art circles.
The total budget for the year long event is estimated at Rp.
1.2 billion (approximately US$131,000) with discussions still
underway with potential sponsors.
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT
Exhibited
in Sanur from January 29th to February 23rd, 15 artworks in
Darga Galeri.
Basquiat, whose working life of about
nine years was truncated by a heroin overdose at the age of
twenty-seven. His career, both actual and posthumous, appealed
to a cluster of toxic vulgarities.
Basquiat's career was incubated by the short-lived graffiti
movement, which started on the streets and subway cars in
the early 1970s, peaked, fell out of view, began all over
again in the 1980s, peaked again, and finally receded, leaving
Basquiat and the amusingly facile Keith Haring as its only
memorable exponents. Unlike Haring, however, Basquiat never
tagged the subways. The son of middle-class Brooklyn parents,
he had a precocious success with his paintings from the start.
The key was not that they were "primitive," but
that they were so arty.
BOTERO in Singapore
20 monumental sculptures
from 9th December – 27th February 2005, Singapore Art
Museum, Esplanade, Lim Bo Seng Memorial, and Anderson Bridge
Botero is a colossal presence in the visual arts world. This
Columbian sculptor and painter, endearingly dubbed as “Colombian’s
soul”, is a heavyweight among discerning art collectors,
gallery owners, and art afficionados worldwide. He is, without
a shadow of doubt a living legend who has charmed the world
with his idiosyncratic and inimitable style, and voluptuous
and whimsical renditions of human and animal forms.
